🌞 The origin: wine of kings and navigators

Fondillón was born in the Huerta de Alicante, back in the 15th century, when the Monastrell grape reached such maturity under the sun that it didn't need added sugar to create a sweet and powerful wine.
It soon became an export jewel. It was drunk by the Tsar of Russia, French kings, and British merchants. It is even mentioned by writers such as Dumas and Alexander VI.

It was shipped to America, Northern Europe, or the Philippines, as one of the most valued wines of the Spanish Empire.

🍷 What exactly is Fondillón?

Fondillón is a wine made exclusively with overripe Monastrell grapes, cultivated in old vineyards of the D.O. Alicante.
Its peculiarity lies in that:

• It is not fortified with alcohol like fortified wines.
• No sugar is added: its sweetness is natural, coming from the grape.
• It is aged in old barrels for at least 10 years, using a static or oxidative system, which gives it notes of raisins, old wood, spices, and candied fruit.

The result is an intense, deep, enveloping wine, capable of accompanying everything from foie gras and blue cheeses to chocolates or moments of contemplation.
