Some drinks are a ritual.
They are not drunk in a hurry, but with leisure and conversation.
Vermouth is one of them: a sip of bottled history, a journey through spices, herbs, and wines that speak of tradition and shared pleasure.
At Bouquet Xaló, we celebrate vermouth for what it is: a liquid gem, capable of bringing friends together, whetting the appetite, and filling the table with Mediterranean aromas.
🕰️ Where was vermouth born? A journey through time
Although its popularity is associated with France, Italy, and Spain, the origin of vermouth takes us even further back, to ancient Greece.
Hippocrates already prepared wines macerated with herbs, which served as both medicine and a social elixir.
But modern vermouth, as we know it today, was born in the 18th century in Italian Piedmont and the Savoy region of France.
Its name comes from the German word “Wermut”, which means wormwood, one of the key plants in its recipe.
Over time, vermouth evolved from a digestive remedy to the aperitif par excellence, spreading throughout Europe and becoming a protagonist in taverns, cafes, and terraces.
🌿 What is vermouth?
Vermouth is a wine macerated with herbs, spices, and fruits, which is then fortified with wine alcohol.
Each producer carefully guards their recipe, but the most common botanicals are:
- Wormwood (its original essence)
- Cardamom, cinnamon, vanilla
- Orange and lemon peel
- Clove, star anise, licorice
- Rosemary, sage, thyme…
Its flavor can be sweet, bitter, spicy, or citrusy, and there are different styles: red, white, dry, or rosé.
🍸 More than a drink, a moment
Vermouth is tradition and modernity at the same time.
Perfect to enjoy neat, with ice and an orange peel, or as a base for classic cocktails like the Negroni, the Manhattan, or the Americano.
But above all, vermouth is the king of the aperitif:
- Before eating, to whet the appetite.
- With olives, cockles, almonds, or cured meats.
- On a bar terrace, or in the tranquility of your home.
