Behind this iconic Penedès winery lies the life of Ceferino Carrión, a young man from Cantabria who crossed the Pyrenees on foot, stowed away on a ship to America, and ended up becoming the restaurateur to the stars in Hollywood. And not only that: he founded one of Spain's most singular wineries, a pioneer in single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines, and committed to excellence from day one.
From Santander to Beverly Hills: The Incredible Story of Jean Leon
Born Ángel Ceferino Carrión in 1928 in Santander, his life took a turn after losing his father and brother in a maritime incident during World War II. Fleeing poverty and the Franco regime, he crossed into France on foot and, after numerous attempts, managed to stow away on a ship to the U.S. There, he started working as a dishwasher and taxi driver, eventually making his way to the heart of Hollywood.
Under the name Jean Leon, he founded the legendary restaurant La Scala in 1956, a regular meeting place for celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and James Dean—who was his close friend and initial partner in the restaurant. Its Mediterranean cuisine, elegant atmosphere, and spectacular cellar with thousands of references made it a symbol of distinction.
A Dream Among Vineyards
In the 1960s, Jean Leon decided to bring his second great dream to life: to produce a wine worthy of his demanding Hollywood clientele. After traveling the world in search of the perfect location, he chose Penedès for its climate, soils, and potential to produce wines with character. He was a visionary: he uprooted local varieties and planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Chardonnay vines from prestigious French vineyards. No one had done it before in Spain.
In 1963, he founded the Jean Leon winery, built in the château style, and began a journey that would revolutionize Spanish viticulture. In 1969, the first Cabernet Sauvignon harvest was gathered, and in 1971, he launched the first wine made from this varietal in Spain: Vinya La Scala Gran Reserva. This was followed by Vinya Gigi Chardonnay and other labels that marked a before and after in national wine.
Wines with Distinction and an Organic Philosophy
Since 1994, the winery has been part of the Torres Family, which has managed to preserve Jean Leon's legacy intact. Under the direction of Mireia Torres, four wines have been consolidated as “Vi de Finca”, the highest viticultural distinction in Catalonia, and since 2012, all its wines are certified as organic.
The winery works exclusively with its own vineyards (65 hectares), demonstrating a clear commitment to traceability, varietal identity, and respect for the terroir. Every bottle that leaves Jean Leon carries a story, a journey, and an unmistakable character.
