A spirit with centuries of history
The origin of whisky dates back to the 15th century, with records in both Scotland and Ireland. Initially produced by monks as medicine, it soon became a popular drink, linked to rural traditions. Its name derives from the Gaelic "uisge beatha", which means "water of life."
Over time, whisky was perfected and diversified: each country developed its own style, distillation methods, types of grain, and aging. Today, it is a symbol of elegance, depth, and craftsmanship.
How is whisky made?
Although each region has its own particularities, the whisky production process includes five main stages:

Malting: the grain (usually barley) is soaked, germinated, and dried to release its natural enzymes.

Milling and mashing: the grain is crushed and mixed with hot water to extract the sugars.

Fermentation: yeasts are added to convert sugar into alcohol.

Distillation: the fermented wort is distilled (once or twice, depending on the country) in copper pot stills or column stills.

Maturation: the distillate is aged in oak barrels for a legal minimum (usually 3 years).
During this process, whisky acquires complex aromas, silky textures, and nuances ranging from smoky to fruity or spicy, depending on the type of grain, the barrel, and the aging time.
Types of whisky
There are several main styles of whisky, each with its own identity:
Scotch whisky (Scotland)
Single Malt: 100% malted barley, from a single distillery.
Blended Scotch: blend of malt and grain whiskies.
Grain whisky: made with other grains like corn or wheat.
Peated: with smoky notes, thanks to peat drying.
Irish whiskey (Ireland)
Smooth, triple-distilled, ideal for beginners in the world of whiskey.
American whiskey (USA)
Bourbon: at least 51% corn, aged in new oak barrels.
Tennessee whiskey: like bourbon, but filtered through maple charcoal.
Japanese whisky
Inspired by Scotch whisky, it stands out for its elegance, precision, and floral or mineral notes. Some distilleries like Nikka or Suntory have achieved international fame for their masterful craftsmanship.
