Dehesa del Carrizal: uno de los grandes Vinos de Pago de España

Dehesa del Carrizal: one of Spain's great Vino de Pago wines

Dehesa del Carrizal, a wine born in a unique place

In the heart of the Montes de Toledo, very close to the Cabañeros National Park, lies one of the most unique wineries in the Spanish wine scene: Dehesa del Carrizal.

To speak of Dehesa del Carrizal is to speak of territory, identity, and a pioneering commitment to producing top-quality wines in an area where no one imagined that some of Spain's most interesting wines could be born.

Its history began in 1987, when Marcial Gómez Sequeira decided to plant the first vines on an estate located about 800 meters above sea level. What started as a personal project has now become one of the benchmarks for the so-called "Vinos de Pago" (Estate Wines).

What does it mean to be a Vino de Pago?

Spain has hundreds of denominations of origin, but very few wineries have achieved the recognition of Vino de Pago.

This category represents the highest level of protection and quality within Spanish wine legislation.

A Vino de Pago must come from a specific estate with unique soil, climate, and landscape characteristics. Furthermore, the entire winemaking process must take place within the property itself.

Dehesa del Carrizal obtained this distinction in 2006, consolidating itself as one of the most prestigious wineries in Castilla-La Mancha and throughout Spain.

An exceptional microclimate in the Montes de Toledo

One of the great secrets of Dehesa del Carrizal is its location.

The vineyards are located on an ancient "raña" of siliceous and acidic soils, a rarity within Castilla-La Mancha. Added to this is a very particular microclimate, influenced by the proximity of the Montes de Toledo and the humidity generated in the area.

These conditions allow for slow and balanced ripening of the grapes, preserving a natural acidity that provides freshness, elegance, and aging potential to the wines.

The first plantings were with Cabernet Sauvignon, to which Syrah, Merlot, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, and Petit Verdot were later added.

The arrival of the Villar Mir family

In 2010, the estate began a new stage under the direction of the Villar Mir family.

Since then, the winery has continued to develop a philosophy based on respect for the environment, innovation, and the constant pursuit of excellence.

Today, every wine produced at Dehesa del Carrizal reflects the character of a unique estate, where nature and human work coexist in balance.

Pierre-Yves Dessevre: international experience at the service of the vineyard

Since 2013, the technical direction of the winery has been in the hands of French winemaker Pierre-Yves Dessevre.

Born in the Loire Valley and trained in Bordeaux, Pierre-Yves has worked in some of the most important wine regions in the world, including California, Mendoza, and various areas of France.

His international vision has allowed him to continue elevating the level of the estate's wines, combining technical precision, respect for the terroir, and a modern interpretation of great estate wines.

Artisanal winemaking from vineyard to bottle

At Dehesa del Carrizal, the entire process takes place within the estate itself.

The harvest is carried out by carefully selecting the grapes. Each variety ferments independently and then goes into French oak barrels specifically chosen for each wine.

The final blend is made seeking balance, depth, and aging potential.

After barrel aging, the wines continue to evolve in the bottle before being released to the market.
