Molí del Giner in Xaló: history, water and heritage in the Vall de Pop
Molí del Giner Xaló · what to see in Jalón · watermills Marina Alta · Xaló heritage · Vall de Pop cultural route
In Xaló, every corner holds a story.
Some are told in the wineries, others in its streets... and others, like the Molí del Giner, are hidden by the water, amidst stone, tradition and memory.
Today, moreover, this space has been reborn as one of the most important cultural centers in the Vall de Pop.
🧭 A mill with centuries of history
The Molí del Giner is one of four watermills that harnessed the power of the Xaló river's water to grind grain.
These mills, known as molins de cacau, used a traditional system in which water moved the waterwheel through the carcavó, a small cavity that activated the entire mechanism.
A perfect example of traditional engineering adapted to its environment.
🏛️ Medieval origins and historical evolution
Its historical value is unquestionable:
- Documented between the 14th and 15th centuries
- Possible origin in Muslim times
- Adapted throughout the centuries
- In operation until the 1970s
More than 600 years of history that reflect the evolution of Xaló and its relationship with water.
🏗️ From mill to cultural space
After a process of more than ten years, the Molí del Giner has been transformed into the Molí del Giner Cultural Space, a complex destined to become a benchmark throughout the region.
This new space combines:
- Recovery of historical heritage
- New municipal library
- Outdoor auditorium for cultural events
A perfect integration of past and present.
🏛️ A restored historic building
One of the most outstanding elements of the intervention has been the recovery of the vaulted room, restored stone by stone.
This space, one of the oldest in the building, is now used for museum purposes and visits, allowing an understanding of how the mill functioned.
Future phases are planned to include:
- Rehabilitation of the original working structures
- Incorporation of an explanatory model of its operation

🔎 Archaeological and patrimonial value
Excavations have allowed the recovery of key elements:
- Millstones
- Remains of machinery
- Industrial structures
- A second underground pool
All of this confirms the importance of the Molí del Giner as a fundamental part of Xaló's heritage.

🌿 A walk between history and nature
Visiting the Molí del Giner also means enjoying its surroundings:
- Rural paths
- Mediterranean landscape
- Accessible routes
A perfect plan to combine culture and nature.
🍷 Xaló: tradition that evolves
The Molí del Giner perfectly represents what Xaló is:
A place where tradition is preserved... but also transformed.
After the visit, the plan continues in the town: gastronomy, wine and a stop at Bouquet Xaló to discover the current character of the valley.
🧭 A past that lives on
The Molí del Giner no longer grinds grain, but it still generates something equally valuable:
culture, identity, and memory.
