There are routes you take for the scenery...
and others you take for the stories they tell.
The Xaló Wells Route is one of those simple walks, yet full of history, where every step connects us with the daily life of those who inhabited this valley centuries ago.
🧭 A walk through the history of Xaló
Just a few kilometers from the sea, in the heart of the Marina Alta, Xaló is much more than wine and gastronomy. It is also memory, culture, and tradition.
The Wells Route invites us to discover one of the most important systems for the town's life:
the communal wells that supplied water before the 1960s.
A short, easy route, perfect for all ages.
💧 What are the Xaló Wells?
This route connects four historic wells, used for centuries by the town's inhabitants:
- Pou de les Figueres (East) – the oldest, documented since the 17th century
- Pou de l’Assegador (South)
- Pou de la Basseta (Southwest)
- Pou del Camí de Passula (West)
These wells were part of a crucial hydraulic network for the water supply in the municipality.
According to historical studies, this system holds great value:
- Architectural
- Ethnological
- Heritage
Today they are protected as a Site of Local Relevance.
🌿 The Main Irrigation Channel: the other great protagonist
Interestingly, there were no wells in the northern part of the village.
The reason is simple: that's where the main irrigation channel was located, the main axis of Xaló's orchards.
This channel not only supplied:
- homes
- crops
- even the village mill
It was, literally, the hydraulic heart of the valley.
