The Vineyard
Cien Reales comes from a plot planted in 1980 in Barranco del Oso, in Labastida. The vineyard is divided into two terraces located next to each other but with clearly differentiated characteristics.
One of them receives a marked Atlantic influence and has shallow clay-limestone soil. From here comes much of the wine's tension, concentration, and verticality.
The second shows a more Mediterranean character, with extremely poor limestone soils, shallow depth, abundant rock, and a high presence of silt. This part provides greater structure and volume.
The poverty of both soils naturally limits the yield of the vines, leading to a very small and concentrated production.
Winemaking
The harvest is done manually, and the grapes arrive at the winery in small 14 kg boxes to preserve their integrity.
In vinification, approximately 20% whole clusters are maintained. Fermentation occurs spontaneously, followed by a 20-day maceration.
Malolactic fermentation takes place in new 600-liter French oak barrels, where the wine then remains for two winters of aging.
The use of a larger wood volume than traditional Bordeaux barrels allows the wine to be refined and provides structure without masking the personality of the plot.
Tasting Notes
Cien Reales presents in the glass with a precise, vertical, and profound profile.
The fruit appears clear and well-defined, accompanied by a distinct mineral background that recalls the calcareous and stony nature of Barranco del Oso. The aging adds complexity and depth, remaining integrated into the whole.
On the palate, it shows structure and tension, with a firm but perfectly integrated tannin. The combination of the two terraces is particularly expressive: freshness and concentration on one hand, volume and amplitude on the other. The finish is long, serious, and persistent.
Food Pairing
Due to its structure, depth, and freshness, this wine is especially suitable for roasted lamb, grilled T-bone steak, red meats, game, slow-cooked stews, and aged cheeses.
The Magnum format also favors a slow and harmonious evolution, making it an particularly interesting bottle to cellar or share around a good meal.
