Sangarida Pico Tuerto 2021 is the deepest and most ambitious interpretation of Mencía within the Fariña family's Bierzo project. Its name pays homage to Pico Tuerto, one of the most emblematic peaks of the Montes Aquilianos, under whose protection some of the oldest and most valuable vineyards of San Lorenzo del Bierzo grow.

Sourced from vines planted between 1901 and 1910, this wine comes from exceptional viticultural heritage where Mencía has historically coexisted with Doña Blanca. After a minimal intervention winemaking process and twelve months of barrel aging, it offers an elegant, profound, and long-lived vision of this Bierzo variety.

The Vineyard

The Mencía comes from four centenary vineyards located in San Lorenzo del Bierzo, planted between 1901 and 1910 in co-plantation with Doña Blanca:

  • La Calleja (1901)
  • Lombano (1901)
  • Las Tablas (1910)
  • El Corzo (1910)

These plots, cultivated in gobelet under an organic philosophy, are located on the slopes of the Montes Aquilianos on clay-loam soils with different orientations, moderate and steep slopes, and an average altitude close to 600 meters. The diversity of exposures provides extraordinary complexity to the wine.

Winemaking

Harvest is done manually into 15 kg boxes with careful grape selection at the winery.

After complete destemming, fermentation takes place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, without the addition of sulfur dioxide during fermentation, respecting the vineyard's expression as much as possible.

Maceration lasts approximately two weeks, with two daily manual pump-overs to achieve a delicate and balanced extraction.

Subsequently, the wine ages for 12 months in new and used 500-liter French oak barrels, refining its structure without losing the identity of the Mencía.

Tasting Notes

It presents an intense deep purple color.

On the nose, it displays great aromatic complexity, with abundant ripe red and black fruit, accompanied by delicate spicy notes, mineral hints, and elegant nuances from aging.

On the palate, it shows a velvety, broad, and perfectly balanced texture. Ripe fruit, natural freshness, and minerality evolve into a long, elegant, and persistent finish, where complexity continues to grow glass after glass.

This is a Mencía with excellent aging potential and great evolution in the bottle.

Food Pairing

Ideal for red meats, lamb, game, traditional stews, mushrooms, mountain cuisine, Iberian cold cuts, and aged cheeses.

Recommended serving temperature: between 16 and 18 ºC.
